Simon Squire BSc PGCE MSc

 

Simon offers considerable experience in the field of outdoor learning and ICT

MSc Education Technology and Society from Bristol University

As centre manager and senior instructor at The Rheidol Study Centre, Aberystwyth, Wales, Simon was responsible for the design and delivery of field study courses for groups ranging from Year 1 to Degree level students. He also ran environmental education training courses for local teachers and student teachers on exchange for the British Council.

An experienced teacher with over 20 years classroom and leadership in Primary sector, Simon has also worked across the whole teaching range from Early Years to Tertiary level. 

Simon is well known in Bristol for organising and directing the highly successful ‘Booted up Bristol’ fieldwork programme which ran from 2004-2009, working with 4000+ year 5 pupils at Blaise Castle Estate and Manor Woods. Key to the success activity was the development of collaboration between ten different organisations including UWE, Bristol Living Rivers, English Nature, Bristol Museum Education Service, The Environment Agency, Atkins Environmental Consulting, Bristol Parks Service, Manor Woods Conservation Group, Education/Business partnerships and Bristol City Learning Centres.

He has also gained a reputation for innovation with the ‘Eat-a-Metre’ project which had over 75 schools participating to grow over 400 square metres of herbs and vegetables. This project had a strong focus on the use of ICT to monitor growth, data collection and creative curriculum approaches to learning. Video of the project was used as the base material for a unit on datalogging by Espresso Education.

Simon has recently gone independent following a post as ICT Learning Consultant with Bristol LA and working as a Curriculum Innovator with Bristol City Learning Centres.

He has also travelled extensively in South America, The Middle and Far East and Europe, both on expeditions and as a tour guide.

Having a passion for the outdoors, Simon is a keen hill walker, mountaineer/rock climber, photographer and cyclist.
